Edge hot melt adhesive is a kind of special adhesive used in artificial plate edge, it is a solval-free thermoplastic adhesive.Hot melt adhesive was heated to a certain temperature, by solid into molten, namely when the coating to or sealing side of man-made board base material surface, cooling into a solid, edge banding material and base material bonding together.

1. Base material for sealing edge hot melt adhesive
(1)EVA(ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer) base material hot melt adhesive, this hot melt adhesive can be divided into two categories: filler and filler-free. The use of EVA as the base material is a common edge sealing hot melt adhesive production technology, its main limitation is that the heat resistance is poor. The ambient temperature of the panel furniture sealed with EVA hot melt adhesive cannot be higher than 120°C.
(2)POL YAMIDE(polyamide) base material hot melt adhesive, this hot melt adhesive has good heat resistance and fast curing characteristics, the main disadvantage is expensive.
(3)HMPU(polyurethane) base material hot melt adhesive, it is a kind of hot melt adhesive with good performance, and it is a guarantee of high quality sheet edge sealing. It is expensive and requires special methods of use.


2. Viscosity of sealing hot melt adhesive


The viscosity of edge sealing hot melt adhesive can not directly reflect the performance of the adhesive. Under normal circumstances, the higher the viscosity of the edge sealing hot melt adhesive, the better its initial adhesive strength, but the worse the coating performance. Low viscosity hot melt adhesive has smaller amount of glue and better wettability. Some hot melt adhesives with low viscosity and fast curing speed may also have high initial adhesive strength. For the poor quality particleboard, the edge sealing needs to choose a hot melt adhesive with higher viscosity, this is because the high viscosity hot melt adhesive has poor fluidity, and it is not as easy to enter the pores of the edge of the particleboard as the low viscosity hot melt adhesive, so that the hot melt adhesive can be fully coated on the edge of the plate.


3, sealing the density of hot melt adhesive


The density of edge sealing hot melt adhesive is generally 0.95-1.6g/cm 3, and the size of its density depends on the amount of filler (the more filler, the greater the density). Because a certain coating area is required when the plate is sealed, the unit length coating amount of filler free hot melt adhesive with small density is less than that of filler hot melt adhesive. And because of the good bonding performance of filler-free hot melt adhesive, it is possible to achieve the same edge sealing effect, and the use of filler-free hot melt adhesive is less than that of filler hot melt adhesive. In order to reduce the amount of glue applied, the edge sealing machine must have a good gluing system.


4. Softening point and use temperature of edge sealing hot melt adhesive


The softening point is an indicator of the heat resistance of the edge sealing hot melt adhesive. The higher the softening point, the less easily the edge sealing hot melt adhesive melts. At the same time, the softening point is also an important aspect of measuring the temperature resistance of panel furniture. In Europe, there has been a set of testing methods for the heat resistance of sheet edge sealing, and standards for the heat resistance of panel furniture have also been proposed. France, Germany and Italy and other countries have not large-scale production of low softening point sealing hot melt adhesive, but domestic manufacturers (including Taiwan manufacturers) still produce and supply to the domestic market, because domestic furniture manufacturers and consumers currently do not pay enough attention to the heat resistance of panel furniture, especially kitchen furniture. The softening point range of EVA hot melt adhesive is generally between 90-135 ° C.


The use temperature of hot melt adhesive refers to the temperature of glue on the rubber roller of the edge sealing machine, and only at this temperature can the hot melt adhesive achieve the best adhesive strength. The temperature displayed on some edge banding machines has a considerable error with the actual temperature, so it is necessary to regularly check the temperature of the machine. The temperature of the edge banding machine is too high, which will make the glue charring and smoking. If it is too low, the adhesive strength will decrease.


5, the opening time of sealing hot melt adhesive and the feeding speed of the edge sealing machine


The opening time of edge sealing hot melt adhesive refers to a period of time before the edge sealing machine begins to glue and presses the edge tape to the substrate, and the opening time varies with the different types of adhesive. The feed speed and opening time of the edge banding machine are closely related, and both are very important in the selection and use of hot melt adhesive. Fast feed edge banding machine must choose the hot melt adhesive with short opening time, on the contrary, choose the hot melt adhesive with long opening time.
